Officials have launched an investigation into an electronic intrusion that has left University Health Services employees using pens and paper rather than computers for the past week.

According to University officials, it is not yet known whether any personal medical files had been compromised and accessed from the outside.

The break-in to the network occurred on April 11, and after an initial investigation, the University of Massachusetts opted to shut down 150 computer workstations at UHS. As of the end of last week, around 30 workstations had been restored. In the meantime UHS has continued operation by using paper records.

According to University officials, most personal files are kept on paper, and the workstations compromised in the network break-in contain only limited information.

All of the workstations are expected to be operational by the end of the week, officials said.
