Bookshop donates to UMass

Howard and Joy Gersten, owners of the Jeffrey Amherst Bookshop, have been recognized for their charitable efforts by the Siegfried Feller Award for Outstanding Service to the Libraries.

On Dec. 8, the bookshop held its fifth annual benefit, where the Gerstens donated 10 percent of their proceeds to the UMass campus libraries.

The fundraiser is held in order to honor the UMass libraries, the only public research libraries in the region.

The proceeds from the benefit will go to improving library facilities to help provide the newest information, resources and services.

According to the Gerstens, the benefit for UMass libraries is a very important event for them.

"We love the library and we wanted to do anything we could to help," said Howard Gersten.

The UMass Amherst campus libraries are open to the general public in addition to students and faculty. The campus libraries also allow borrowing privileges to all adult residents of Massachusetts, UMass Amherst alumni and secondary school students under 18 years old.

The Jeffrey Amherst Bookshop & College Store was founded in 1937 by an Amherst College alum. The bookshop is a general independent bookstore with a specialty in Emily Dickinson and children's books.
